Astral
"It's easy to dismiss or compare shoegazer bands to the Cure, My Bloody
Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain or Joy Division, especially songs drenched
in flanger and punctuated with tight bass and drums. To simply write it
off as a knock off copy is unfair to Astral. Orchids is completely and surprisingly
enjoyable on its own merits. This San Francisco trio manages to pull off
a much more dense and atmospheric sound than you would expect. Dave Han's
vocals drift about on top of long, dreamy guitar lines. His voice is the
emotional base from which the songs pull their charm. Drummer Shawn Poh
pulls out some great beats and hits every emotion moment in each of the
songs. Bassist Amy Rosenoff is the clothesline that all of this sonic goodness
hangs on. The record s a brilliant study of everthing that is appealing
in shoegaze... Astral has produced a record that begs you to screw in some
colored light bulbs, sit back and let their music drift over you like a
rebellious teen in 1983."
